Process Management Tools

Does anyone have any experience of business process management tools that they can share? We are reviewing our approach, looking at options that will give us a simple to follow, business orientated process view (something that will help the end users rather than the process geeks!).

Any experience that can be shared would be useful – thank you in advance for your help.

Hi, how are you ? Can you share a bit more about what you need to do with the end result ? Do you need a tool to help you to map the process, or one that will help the user manage the process ? Do you want to map the user process or the IT process (to help the user understand it) ? Cheers !

Hi John, I’m very well, thank you – I hope you are too!

It’s both requirements really – we need a tool to map the process, with a consistent format, terminology and look & feel across the organisation. The primary goal is for the user to easily understand the process(es), to drive adoption. As we’re an IT services provider, we don’t have the demarcation between ‘IT’ and ‘business’ process that some organisations might have (though, of course, arguably such demarcation shouldn’t apply in any business – but that’s probably a separate thread!).

Another key requirement is to be able to manage a process in multiple languages, so ease of translation is desired, also for this to be easily accessible across the group. Also to have automation that supports our process governance – clear process ownership, version control and authorisation and acknowledgement will help too.

One of the standards for this is BPMN 2, and there is software such as Eclipse, which helps you write the notation. If you search both those that should get you started.

Some Content Management Systems, eg Goss iCM, are able to process workflows based on BPMN 2 notation.

Took a look at the IBM tool mentioned here. Looks like it may be along the lines you were looking for, Theresa. Will you let us know if you have taken a look at it and, better still, what your experience is if you decide to give it a try ?
